I am zone 6a and I have planted short fall crops as late as the end of July but they aren't as productive. I just put my fall crop in last week and I am starting some cucumbers to transplant for a fall crop now also.

I wouldn't wait too long. It's better for everything to be done weeks before your first frost then too immature when Jackie boy comes to call.
But won't it be too hot right now for stuff like spinach, broccoli raab, fava beans?

I've sowed some broccoli, per the package instructions to sow on July 1. I have to do the cauliflower tomorrow and the brussel sprouts. But I'd hate to lose my fava bean seeds. I have tons of spinach and broccoli raab to put out though. What about peas? Ok in this heat?

Here is a link to one of the best little "handbooks" I've ever found. http://littlehouseinthesuburbs.com/2009/01/free-printable-o-rama-herbs-fall-and.html

Just find out what your first frost date is in your area, fill that date in, and then fill in the dates going backwards. It tells you what to plant and when!

They also have a spring one if anyone is interested in printing one off for next spring! http://littlehouseinthesuburbs.com/2009/01/free-download-2009-spring-garden.html

Both of these are free, btw!

I had a farmer tell me the other day that Sept. is best for spinach. He said you can almost have it through the winter if mulched well.
