Lesa- that's a gorgeous clematis! 
Skeeter - if you think about it, when they are grown in the nursery they are in black plastic pots and mostly in the sun,and they do well...I'm sure in some climates or certain garden areas they may appreciate a bit of root cover, but I don't think it's super critical.
