Where to get seeds?

I've only been seriously gardening for a few years and have mostly started by using plants, not seeds. I want to cut down on cost and try my hand at sprouting seeds this year. All our local suppliers basically carry traditional veggies with little variety. I'm looking for some ideas of places to order seeds.???

I've been happy with Park Seed, but I have a stack of at least a dozen seed catalogs. Gurney's, Vermont Bean, Johnny's, Southern Exposure, Baker Street, Seed Saver's, Totally Tomatoes... pick one (or more!) I'm surprised you haven't made it on their mailing lists yet.

Actually if you just want 'normal' stuff like cucumbers, squash and tomatoes, you'll probably find what you want in the racks at your local garden or home improvement store, and you won't have to pay shipping.

check your local feed stores. mine carries a lot of different companies that have more organic or heirloom varieties than what Home Depot, Lowe's or Wal-mart carries. Baker's Creek is a decent seed company to order through. they usually have some neat varieties for decent prices and flat rate shipping. Johnny's Seeds is good too but their shipping can get crazy because they base it from your purchase costs. also, look into FedCo Seeds up in Maine. they are pretty good and have some different sized packs of seeds available. their website is a little tricky to use at first but i got the handle on how to use it. if you are looking for them you can also search for 'Moose Tubers' that is what they call their potatoes.

Tis the season for ordering seeds all right. I'd recomend staying with the small independent companies and away from the ones that Monsanto has gobbled up. I'd also recomend planting open pollinated heirloom varieties as much as possible so you can save your own seeds in the future. One company I highly recommend is the Sample Seed Shop. It is run by just one woman and her husband and sells seed in small packets just the right size for a home garden. Most of the times your order will arrive with a bonus packet of some seed related to your order that may be new to you. Their web address is:

I just ordered for the vegetables garden and several flowers from Sample Seeds and their prices are outstanding. I'm also new to gardening. Shipping was also super reasonable.
