Sat night I was at weekend house, about 1 am I decided I was hungry ( never had dinner). All restaurants and supermarket where close by this time. My fridge only had drinks and condiments, in back of kitchen cabinet I found 2 cans of soup, 1 mushroom 1 butternut squash. When I check the exp dates both where 2014. I threw them away. My nephew claims canned soup does not go bad. Would you eat some thing canned passed its exp date ?

yes as long as it not leaking/ bulging or off smell once opened...
after the exp date the coating in the can will start breaking down, but that will take many years...and you might have a metal taste to it..after 5 years
the best used-exp dates are there for food safety reasons...

Major is right, if it isn't broken, smells bad when opened or can looks like it has been compromised in some way it is ok. i may be hesitant to use it too but i just make sure it is piping hot to kill off any germs that could cause issues.

Yep...I'd have eaten it too. That's not too far out of date and one can check the condition of the can and the food inside to make a determination of possible safety...then cook it at a high temp and go for it.

I agree with the eating rather than tossing group. Manufacturers are required by law to post use by dated. They err on the short side every time. Sells more product.

I have my Masters in Food Science. It will be good for years to come, and do pay attention to what others say about the can.

Do you know that commercially made mayo and white salad dressing don't need to be refrigerated? Or catsup or mustard and many other things. The pH and water activity are such that they are shelf stable. Manuf say to refrigerate to cover their assets and to slow down rancidity (oils absorbing O2).
