It seems as though while we guard the front door GMO is sneaking in the back door. More and more plants are being GMOd.
One of the recent ones was sugar. I always thought sugar was sugar but then I found out that sugar beets had been GMOd. It then became necessary to check the labels on yet another item. If it just says sugar the odds are high that it is beet sugar. You have to be sure it says pure cane sugar.
The non GMO project helps you be sure by attaching a non GMO seal to those products which have passed their rigorous program. If it has the seal you can rest assured that there are no GMO products in it. Zulka just got their certification and the seal is now on all of their packaging.
Zulka sugar is an unrefined sugar that has not been processed and bleached to make it whiter. The sugar has a very light honey tint and richer flavor than refined sugars but can be used interchangeably. It's made in Mexico so it may not be available in all stores but you can ask the manager to stock it if it isn't there.

You can go to nongmoshoppingguide.com to get a list of companies whose products are GMO free. Salmon may be the first "meat" that goes GMO, if we aren't vigilant and vocal. A GMO, farmed salmon has been developed, just not approved for human consumption yet. Yet.
