But if it is something not needed I'd look at is as spending $5000. I know the women on here think I'm nuts with that kind of thinking, but maybe some (not all, but some) of the men will understand.

Not all the women, either. ;) If it's not needed $5 is too much to spend, let alone 5K.

Here is the perfect livestock for the small holder...NY, you CAN milk these!

I've had this breed and they are my favorite livestock of all time. Gentle, sweet, docile, good mothers, big udders, easy to handle, easy lambing, fattens up like crazy on just grass and hay, naturally disease and parasite resistant(and will stay that way if you use the right methods of raising them), lots of meat on the carcass. Best of all? No shearing! Wool just peels off in big sheets at the appropriate time and you can boil it down to remove the lanolin, which is creamy and mild in smell, good for many things.

LOL I like goats better
I bet goats are 99% as difficult to fence in as buffalo. (Mileage may vary with pygmy goats.)

A cherry tree grew in our front yard. Proper farm, over the fence was a pasture. Tree branches grew over the fence.

Cattle trimmed off the lower branches. And yet ..!

Somehow, my brother's goat could climb into that tree! She would arrive in the front yard ... but, I once saw her walking on the branches of that tree!

There are buffalo here in small pastures with normal fencing. As long as they have everything they want, no problem. Imagine like a hog, if they want out, there is no stopping them.
Saw bull pen in Colorado, 10' tall made of logs. Bull had chain as well as owner said if bull had the mind, he could get out. Used bull to make cow/buffalo crosses.idea was offspring lower fat, utilize prairie grasses cattle couldn't. Assume not successful as never caught on-back in '70's.

There are a pair, at least, of bison about a mile from me. They are just contained in regular horse type fencing. Maybe a hot wire somewhere, I drive by too fast to notice.
