I use horseradish in my pen as shade. Horseradish loves the extra N and the chickens love the shade.

When a section of vegetable garden is done, is it a good idea to let the chickens in on that part for awhile to munch on what's left?

If you can keep them contained it's a great idea. My husband built me a 4'x8' little "chicken tractor" so that I can put a couple of chickens on a particular bed whenever I want to. I'm using it in the yard as a brooder for my young chickens right now. But you can see how it would hold about 3 full sized layers for a couple of days, which is long enough for them to scratch out any bugs, or bits of plant, and help turn the soil.

Thank you, my husband does good work. I guess when you build schools and car dealerships for a living a little chicken tractor is simple. ;)
