The small local fairs, the County Fairs all led up to the STATE FAIR from the time Nevada became a state. The Battle Born State.
This year the State Fair wasn't a fair at all. A Carnival Company was hired to set up rides at the Carson City park along with Craft Booths.

Nevada is a Ranching State. The fairs have always been the showing and judging of Farm and Ranch Amimals.

This year the only animals at what was called the State Fair were the service dogs at our booth.

That's sad!

What's going on? Is this to become another 'equalizer' event. No showing animals or projects means no winners or losers. Cheaper than buying participation ribbons for everyone in 4H.

So far, the Rock County Fair -- America's first ever county fair -- is focused on showing animal raised, gardening efforts, sewing, woodworking, etc projects done through the year by Rock County residents, mostly 4H, but also other groups and individuals.

Blame diseases. Home livestock people are spreading them so expect fewer and fewer animals. Use to be kids of people who raised animals for food (profit) were the ones showing. Then people saw the $$$$$ and joined in. Then some took stupid chances with professional AG having to pay the bill.

This, in Nevada, was terrible to see. You would have loved the Fair as in past years, the wonderful, best animals of all kinds followed by a Rodeo.
Make a person want to weep.

The 4H, as Red mentioned, would show animals they raised and groomed, this year nothing.

Excuse me, that BS. Farmers and ranchers know how to take care of their animals as do the 4H and other people.
The greed, the wanting to make the fair into a money making side show is most of the problem. The county fairs are still great, just smaller.

Those who organized the fair in the past, have been slowly replaced by types who have other goals.

True, I haven't been to the Wisconsin State Fair in many, many years. It is possible that the state fair has declined to little more than rides and carney.

Hi Red, Decline is not the word for it. The 4H was not even allowed an area, they pay their own way, clean up after their animals.
It was not a fair at all. People came, in the past, from all around the U.S. to see and buy at the fair.
We'll see what happens next year and in other states.
We've had friends from Briton come to both the Fair and Rodeo.
I think this is the stupidity of one state and may be corrected. We'll see how loudly people scream.

@valley ranch sorry, most disease spreads are from amateur 4H people. Professionals test, recognize and deal with out breaks. When we got spread of avian flu, guess where it came from? Not commercial poultry. No respected livestock man here takes anything to any fair and then brings it back home. On introducing new stock, it goes through tests and then is quarantined till known safe. One reason AI (or transfer) has become the preferred way to add genetics.

Sorry seedcorn, The 4H and are very often the kids of professionals Farmers and Ranchers, they have the advice of parents and friends who raise food and animals for a living, who have Vets who advise and treat their animals. And most often Plant and Raise Proper Safe Crops.
