Favorite Cold Weather Meal

Cooler weather certainly brings out the soup person in me. I love homemade soups. Usually I plan to make one meal out of a meat, a second same meat meal with more veggies and/or grains and less meat (such as stir fry), and save the rest of the meat for soup -- usually with fresh bread of some type. Mm-m-m-m-m! If hardier appetites prevail the second meat meal is skipped in favor of soup.

Other than myself, no one will eat leftovers, but they don't look like leftovers this way and the soup is often delayed by one day to provide a break in the same meat three days in a row.

Even breakfast has me thinking warm stomach and we eat a lot of oatmeal, corn meal (almost better in the evening as desert), or hot wheat through the winter.

Usually is Cream of Wheat, yes. After heating the corn meal as per instructions (I don't grind my own meal) I put the extra -- that I always deliberately make -- into a small rectangular pan in the fridge. Come supper, I slice the cold meal, fry it in bacon grease and slather with jelly, syrup, or crushed berries. A dollop of whipped cream is nice, but not necessary.

New England Boiled Dinner!! :weee I love the way the turnips add to the meal, along with the sweet potatoes, and cabbage. Of course the meat is the main ingredient.

Then, there is Cajun Red Beans and Steamed Rice.

Or chili, with a pan of cornbread...baked up hot in a cast iron skillet. :drool

I'm with Moxie on the chili and cornbread . The cornbread from home grown Painted Mtn. of course, and baked in a sizzling cast iron skillet.:)

And just like Cane said, a good potato chowder, with our own potatoes.
The boys prefer it with lots of cheddar and bacon, but I love just about any way. Add some home made soft bread sticks to that and it's perfect!

That's what I love about cold weather, we get to have more soups!
