First Hummingbird

I saw our first hummingbird at the kitchen window feeder Tuesday. It was a little Calliope male. We surprised each other! I had just walked into the kitchen and the movement must have startled him, he zipped off into the trees.

My husband reminded me that it was probably time to hang the feeders out on Sunday. This is the usual time of year they show up, but it seems early to me because it's been such a late spring. I'm glad he remembered or I might have missed seeing our little friend. Doesn't seem like there's much to forage on out there, but I trust they know what they're doing.

Anybody else have hummers visiting?

Thanks for the reminder, my feeder isn't up yet. With my early spring it should have been up by now.

Dh reminded me it was about time to get the feeders out last weekend. They are up but I have not seen any yet.

With all these cool temps and wet weather it doesn't seem time for them yet. Better get the feeders out and filled or miss out on them. Thanks for the heads up!

I've had a feeder up about 10 days, but only saw my first hummer yesterday. Or maybe Wednesday. Yesterday was a blur of rain and babysitting a 2 year old.

A couple days ago I saw a hummer pausing at a place I had a feeder last year. Just flitting there for a while. Nothing blooming there. So of course, I hung a feeder there again. They have us trained.

I saw my first of the season yesterday. One was at the feeder and one buzzed me when I was in the workshop. I'm glad Thistle reminded me to get the feeder up.

I love it that they return to the same places. The Calliope pair we have now are obviously returnees. They aren't skittish at all like new visitors are. I can do the dishes and they come and get long drinks at the window without being startled.
I asked my husband to bring the feeders in for a rinse and refill the other morning. While they were down the male kept buzzing around the hanger by the kitchen window. Circling and looking...when dh took them back out the male barely backed off enough to hang it back up.

Maybe we have more than one pair, but if there are several they're all Calliope. I haven't seen a Rufous yet, and they are ordinarily the first here.

@thistlebloom how many different kinds of hummers do you see? We only have ruby-throats around here.
