Nyboy mentioned in another post that the smoke tree I mailed him a couple of years ago, is not growing. These prolific and colorful trees grow in zones 4 - 8. I had them very successfully in Angels Camp CA, which was a solid zone 9. Anyway, now that I'm in an 8b zone (USDA), I am happy with my seedlings that I brought with me from Angels Camp. They need full sun, little pruning, and some spring fertilizer. The photos below are the same seedlings, but I planted two and the other two are languishing in 1 gal pots, destined for the other home next spring.

ps. I note that Thistlebloom has smoke bushes. Same genus.

See the spots on those potted smoke trees? That my well water!!!!! I'm tired of waiting for hubs to do something (won't be now) so I have Quinn's Water Service coming Monday afternoon. My brand new white sinks in the brand new master bath, along with the dog bowls, are turning blue. Hard well water and low pH well water dissolving the copper piping slowly over time.

Hey! I just hijacked my own thread!! hahahaha

I'm a fan of smokebush also. :) I have several. One I have left alone to grow to tree form, all the others I coppice to keep as shorter shrubs. I think their fall color is terrific and they are such carefree additions to the landscape.

I have planted many for clients also. They used to be almost deer proof, but the deer pressure is now great enough that the darn deer browse them down in the fall.

"Grace" is my favorite flavor. :)

Mine doesn't grow doesn't die just sits there. Plenty of sun and water. I HATE WELL WATER :sick:sick:sick:sick no matter how long i am in shower I never feel soap is 100% rinsed off, same washing dishes. Water has so much iron it stained things yellow. Has a sulfur smell and this is a improvement after several thousand dollar water system put in

The soil around here is red clay loam, lots of iron in it. When we get a lot of rain, there are seeps where water comes out of the ground. The seeps stain the sand a red color and the water has a sheen to it. Even though we have sand, dig down far enough and you will find red iron ore dirt. We have dug fence post holes and watched them fill with water. We are sitting on top of a smallish aquifer, water is 125 feet down, but to get clear water we would need to go around 600' and I don't want to dump $12,000 in a hole. I am happy with the community water and would have to live a long, long time to make putting in a well cost effective. LOL
