Even taking precautions we have frozen water pipes going to the kitchen sink. Grrrrr It is -17 and windy so they are saying feels like - 50/60 So glad there is no school today! Even the Post Offices are closed so the carriers do not have to work in this. Well I better go work at getting pipes thawed. Already have a space heater blowing into cabinet and fan at crawlspace in basement. Ugh.

:(
Glad you at least don't have the added danger of driving the bus today. Hunker down!

I HONESTLY don't know how I'd cope with more than a few hours of the temps that so many are dealing with.

I'm actually HOPING the ground will freeze hard enough that I can drive a round bale to the back of the pasture instead of having to drop it at the gate. :hide

We bottomed out at -16 F at 8AM this morning. Horses in stalls, barn 20 degrees warmer than outside, all 3 in great shape. I put two flakes of straw at the openng of the chicken coop (where the ramp is,) yesterday I added a really large cardboard box split in two to block the north and west winds, which have been howling between 25-35 mph since yesterday. Chickens broke through the straw at 9AM this morning. Had to break the 1/2 inch of ice off of the top of the heated dog water bowl, still water underneath. I dumped it and gave them fresh water bc the sparrows and starlings "flock" to the only open water available and crap in the bowl. ALL birds in good shape, but you never know if a chicken is affected in this weather until a few days go by. I bought a bag of cracked corn for the birds and horses and fed cracked corn mixed with grit on top of their chicken feed, and fed 1/2 cup corn each to the horses. I will be going out at 4PM when is only -2.

i went out and shovelled the end of the drive where the plows piled things up as usual. in this wind i had to do it in three shifts because i could not stand and rest or i would start to freeze. Mom had shovelled the rest of the drive yesterday a few times. she complains if she doesn't get enough exercise and i do too. we argue about who gets to shovel... :) i was sweating too much under all those layers, but as soon as i stood still that cold was pretty fierce so i just came in and rested out of the wind for 15 minutes and then went back out.

i think the wind will keep most of it clear now.

i see the forecast is now for 48F for Monday... lol

"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night." Well, there goes that perfect record.:thNothing is business as usual - nor should it be - when the wind chill is -50 F. or lower. Schools are closed most of the week too, which is probably the reason so many employees at my job are absent.

My furnace was repaired by 2:00 AM, the temperature in the house never dropped below 60 F.; and once both furnaces were running, the house quickly returned to normal. Good thing, because when I drove to work a few hours later, the temp in the car was -27 F. :ep Brrrr!!! The car just barely started.

The car is even less likely to start tomorrow :fl since it is expected to be even colder tonight. Its possible we might hit -30 degrees before sunup... the coldest I can remember for a long time. Just to put that in perspective, that would be 63 degrees colder than freezing. I know there are places where such temperatures are fairly common (including Antigo here in Wisconsin), but that level of cold is unusual here. To put that in further perspective, our expected temperatures for the next several days are nearly identical to McMurdo Station, Antarctica.

Words fail me, we need a "Brrrrr" emoji (blue of course). It could double as a shaking in fear emoji. ;)

The final punchline of this cold snap may not be known until Spring, when we find out how many fruit trees & perennials have been killed by the cold. People here have been in the habit of planting stock hardy to Zone 5, which they might get away with for awhile... but we are actually in Zone 4b, and even the low temp in that range should not exceed -24 F. The only saving grace is that a foot of snow fell just before the temperature plummeted... which will hopefully protect my garlic.
