We have a lovely hard maple in the back yard. 15 years old maybe. All of a sudden I notice this on 1/2 to 1/3 of the leaves. The hard maple on the west side of the house or those across the street do not have it. I do not see any insects or eggs. DH thought all the rain/storms and hail lately could be this cause. But why just this tree? Any ideas?

could be a combination of things, but to me with the near constant clouds and rain we've been having and the hard storms it could be some damage by hail and then a fungal or bacterial infection that has gotten in the leaves.

as for the whole area the tree is in and the drainage for it and how that has been going perhaps it is just waterlogged somehow?

You are right about the cleanup. You clean up what is dead from your tree or crops, then use compost/manure to fertilize. People sometimes get it confused bc it is good to leave grass clippings to fertilize the grass, so why not let the leaves fertilize the tree? We are entering year 2 of extremely wet. Fungus did in my old red apple tree. EVERYBODY tells me that my Johnagold trees are gonna produce really tasty fruit, so I don't mind. Still hunting for a cheapo apple tree to help fertilize them. Leaning towards McIntosh.

Mac's are my favorite apple.

IMO if a tree can't survive it's own leaves below it that is a sign that something seriously is wrong in the world... like perhaps people have been breeding for poorly suited trees or someone has planted the wrong tree in the wrong spot.

Maple trees prefer moist areas. However, the soil also should be well-drained. Most maple trees ideally should receive 1 1/2 inches of water each week. Rain is ideal, but you can also water the maple tree. check the area where it stands. water distribution on that area might be the cause.
