Hello all! My husband Dan and I (Heather) joined this forum along with the other backyard forums today. We recently moved in to our 1800's farm house on 40 acres and became turn-key farmers. Chickens, ducks, pigs, cows, calves, and in the future, turkeys! While very exciting there have also been a few stressful moments on the homestead. We were thrilled to discover this support group and look forward to soaking in as much knowledge as possible! We have 4 boys and homeschool so this farm has provided many lessons for them and they absolutely love it!

wow! hello and welcome to TEG. :) that does sound rather adventuresome for sure! :)

how long have you been there? do you keep a journal at all? :)

i don't think i could jump in to all that from the start without some prior experience, that's a lot of animals and responsibilities. my main concern is simple safety because i just don't know what some of those animals will do and they're pretty big...

thanks for the pictures. :)

Hi! We've been here for 3 months and are living our dream life. My husband grew up on a farm and my fraternal side of the family are farmers, so there is thankfully a bit of prior knowledge. I don't journal but I do take quite a few photographs. I used to journal and really need to make the time for it again! So many neat stories to document. :D

You will have problems with both weeds and insects. You will be maintaining 40 acres. I only have 5 acres.
I suggest that you make your peace with dandelions and clover. Clover is good for the soil, and dandelions are only a suburban bain. Animals love to eat both of them. Purslane, too, is not a real problem.
It is possible to maintain your property without chemicals, but it is very time consuming.
I suggest, as you work on your 40 acres, that you sub divide it into much smaller units, and tackle part of one unit at a time. Otherwise, by year 2 you will feel overwhelmed. Just some fyi, year 19 on my "estate."
