they got us down for 11F this coming Tuesday evening. that qualifies as a definite brr!
We are forecast to see our first frost/light freeze next Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, around 30 F.
THEN...the bottom drops out and by Tuesday morning, 11 degrees F!!!

It's interesting that this is happening quite suddenly over such a large area of the continent. The temptation in the mind is to imagine the Polar Vortex as a sudden tilting of the Earth, a sifting of the poles. Of course, that is a slow process over months.

Global conditions show strong winds in the North Atlantic. LINK Ya know, I've never had a desire to be a mariner, ancient or otherwise.

there are usually some pretty strong winds in that area. i never could handle being on the ocean very well even in calmer weather...

I spent much of my life as a mariner, although never in the North Atlantic. Went around South America into the South Atlantic,, though, which is just as active. Several times rode through 60-70' seas, on a ship large enough to plunge through it... it was scary nonetheless. You learn a lot of respect for the power of the angry seas.

We are on tap for that weather, too, @ducks4you. It was 60 today and sunny, with wind from the east, of all things. It is supposed to start raining by morning and the temp will drop and drop. Snow and freezing rain by evening drive time, then really cold by Tuesday.

We got 4-6 inches and some wind. Roads are snow and ice packed. So staying in. Need new tires (Those are scheduled for tomorrow, but snow got here 1st) Really not all that bad, but 1st snows everyone remembering how to drive in it.... NOT! Safer to stay in. Tuesday will be record setting COLD :(

yeah, Mom went out to play cards with a friend and came back a while later saying it wasn't worth it as the roads were bad and everyone was going all over the place. glad she came home and is safe.

Woke up to middle 30s today, and a light drizzle. By the time I got to work, it was snowing sideways and the temp had dropped ten degrees. It snowed that way for six hours; I think we got about two inches. The roads were bad, there was ice beneath the snow in spots, and the most worrying part was dealing with the other drivers who think that they can drive in snow like it is rain. I must have passed ten different places where people had run off the road and into ditches on the 25 mile drive home. Right now the temp is 16 with a wind chill of 9, and we are supposed to get down to single digits tonight.

My oak tree still has green leaves on it...this is kind of surreal, lol.

That's the kind of day when you wish you could just stay home. Glad you made it home okay Prairie Rose.
I used to dread those long drives home in the dark when the snow was piling up. I had about the same distance commute and a very dark two lane road. shiver
So glad that's in the past.
