Since this is memorial weekend, we went to walk where our daughter is buried. Saw this very nice Robin there. :)

The Pine Siskins are back in the garden :).

This weekend was the first that I have seen of them in 2021. No flocks, just a couple, 3 or 4. Not singing much and busy, as usual ... then off to somewhere else.

Two Mourning Doves flew over. The Collared Doves are nesting in one of the neighbor's evergreens as usual. But, it's always good to see some Mourning Doves.

A Junco showed up but only one. I think there must be a nest somewhere nearby. Goldfinches were in the garden, yesterday.

Mourning Dove

My grandma used to carefully tend a little garden on her back deck especially for a mourning dove that nested there. No other reason. She made sure there was a little tree to cover up the nesting site (I think it was under a roof rim but I don't really recall) so the mommy was safe and protected from hawks and such.

The mommy seemed to feel it was a good spot because she came back every year to nest there.

I used to have wire mesh supports for their nests wired in the branches until the Eurasian Collared doves moved in.

Are there a large number of the Collared Doves in your neck of the woods, @R2elk ?

When they first came here, there were scads (since they don't seem to flock, maybe scads is okay ;)). Anyway, that was the summer when a family of Great Horned Owls moved into the neighbor's hay barn.

I thought, "relief from the rodents!" After several weeks, I walked through the mostly empty barn thinking that I would find rodent remains. One mouse skull! Collard Dove wings and feathers everywhere! There really aren't as many of those doves around these days but I don't think that it is just the owls.

Curious how the Mourning Dove population is fairing in Rouge River Valley. @Rhodie Ranch ? There were scads there when I was a kid.

Too many of them here. I seldom see a Mourning Dove anymore.

I haven't been seeing the owls but I have been informed that a neighbor is eliminating them rather than provide secure nighttime housing for his young turkeys.

I also have not been seeing the number of hawks that I used to see.

High population of Grackles this year keeping everything away from their nests. Normally they have moved on by now but this year there are still new fledglings falling out of the nests.
