Too cold here in Montana to grow any nuts, right?

Well, as I said, Manchurian Walnuts can take as cold as Canada and Alaska, and I assume the Siberian Hazels can as well. So I guess it really depends on what specific kind of conditions you have, if, like @R2elk, you have conditions that will kill any starts with intermittent freezes, or you are more even and amenable.

There should be nuts available that will grow in Montana. Depends on your location. Parts of Montana have much better growing conditions than I have here.

I'm east of Missoula. Summer at it's warmest is about 110, and winter at it's coldest is around -30. Pretty dry summers, too.

If the winters stay cold until actual spring the low temp is not a problem. My problem here is the January thaw followed by sub zero temps followed by a February thaw followed by sub zero temps.
