Beef cattle waiting on a hay round in the background They are pretty smart.

I could have speared the hay round better, oh well it made it out to the pasture that way.

Black berry seedlings. Supposed to be thornless with big blackberries. I need enough 4 foot by 100 foot double row. So I don't plan on thinning the seedlings. I'll let them grow until I harden them off and transplant into a kiddie pool of barn floor scrapings, sawdust, cheap bagged top soil and liberal dose of barn lime. Then baby sit them until they go dormant and the transplant them into 100 foot double row this fall/early winter.

Anyone see issues with my plans? Good?

Mother in law gave me three peach trees last year. They are planted at her house like 30 minutes away. They mature and are like 15 plus foot tall. Nobody has ever took a pruner to them, let alone cared for them.

I pruned them back hard last spring, lots of good new wood for peaches to develop on now all three were infested with stink bugs. Real shame because there would have been a good harvest of peaches on those trees but every single peach was destroyed by stink bugs. I sprayed them with dormant oil this fall and told her I would try and care for them this year.

It would be a lot easier if they were here but I don't want to dig them up all infested and bring the problem home. If I can get them in good shape this year. I may dig them up early winter and transplant them here. IDK... She has zero desire to care for them so teaching her would be a fools errand. I told her I would come spray them after pedal drop. They haven't even started to flower yet she's seeing leaves budding ๐Ÿ™„ Maybe she just misses me and wants me to come by ๐Ÿ˜‚

Should not spray them until at least 90% of the pedals have dropped. Doing so would be counter productive and kill the pollinators (bees).

I grafted these peach scionwood on prunus americana rootstock from fedco, Monday today is Friday (5 days). It's hard for me to believe but I got my first bud break already on contender peach scionwood tip with a whip and tongue graft. I can't deny there is most definitely green showing. I really didn't expect to see any bud breaks for a few more weeks. โ˜๏ธ

And here I am doing everything in my power to get rid of the blackberries in my yard. They do have thorns. They take over everything! Grow everywhere! Perhaps these domesticated sorts will stay where you put them.

The blackberry variety I sowed is Kiowa. It's supposed to be the world's largest blackberry and thornless. I can't afford plants for 100 foot double row.

But I can afford seeds, a kiddie pool and a growing season. The only way I know to get rid of blackberry plants is to mow them regularly.

Here's what they are supposed to look like. Probably looking at 3 years from seed, 2 years from bare root cutting.

It comes in from the back field behind me. The previous renters had a goat that used to do a fine job of keeping it in check. Now who ever it is moved on and the current people just let it grow. I've gotten it out of my yard but patrol with a pair of pruning sheers every day to snip back any growth.

I do mean every day. They grow fast. >_>

Those berries look amazing. Aren't those thorns on the branch though? Are they just smaller thorns?

Just checked it was March 12, when I sowed rhubarb seeds. They are just starting to poke up (7 days). Truth be known I was hoping only a few would pop up, but looks like more than a few. Although, I was able to give 9 away so far, unsprouted even ๐Ÿ˜

Wednesday 01 March I sowed 50 foot rows of carrots, lettuce, beets and spinach.

Hoed a shallow trench, rolled out cheap single ply toilet paper and sowed the carrots. Easier to see those little tiny carrot seeds that are the same color as the soil, this way.

Thankful Almighty gave me a window with dry enough soil to till and with no wind, to sow those little tiny seeds.

I understand the actual reason for the tailtape at the end of the row but it still made me laugh!! A non-gardener would think you stop for nothing! ๐Ÿ˜‚
