This probably belongs in the
Concerned about growing old thread, BUT, DH drove me in today. He had court at 1:30PM and I had a scheduled echocardiagram scheduled for 2:30. He was apologizing for dropping me off at 12:30PM and that I had to wait so long.
I brought the Seed Savers 2025 catalog with me and a printed 2025 year calendar for calculating the squash vine borer season and
preliminary calculations for when to start zucchini, cucumbers, watermelon, and canteloupe, since I have the seeds already for all of them. I have seeds for Moon and Stars watermelon which I am anxious to grow this year.
I double checked the squash vine borer season. THAT begins with hatching last week of June-1st week of July. I didn't grow more than one pumpkin last year--pumpkins started in July produce fruit for me by September--and I started Fall cucumbers in 2024 after squash vine borer season was over, so this is no issue on My property, yet these nasty bugs can fly up to several miles away, so best to be prepared.
Anyway, if there are any moths, I should expect to see the larvae by July 8th, and I won't want any flowers on affected plants to be around between July 8th-August 18th.
I also discovered a new (to me) product, Kaolin clay. I can purchase a small amount, it is a dissolvable powder that you can spray on your vegetables and on your fruit.
Non toxic, unless ingested, you can exfoliate your skin with it, too.
NOW, I have to figure out where I can buy smaller than 25 pounds worth.
Still, I spent my 2 hours waiting time wisely, I had checked in early, didn't get in early bc they do a LOT of these daily, BUT, I was out and ready to leave by 2:45PM, now home.
Once I double check when to germinate the seeds for each of these, I can write in my new garden planner and use my $1 (Dollar General) 2025 calendar to keep on track. I have calculated a full week to start their seeds.
These are the specialty seeds for this year. I have a starting calendar for everything else.
Just some FYI of why it's good to get to dr appts early.
Kaolin clay is a non-toxic, environmentally friendly way to get rid of cucumber beetles and corn rootworm. Kaolin clay for integrated pest management.
