Do you dip the stem end of your dahlias in boiling water? I entered a Dahlia in the county fair, and the instructions said to do this to slow down decomposition.
I don’t dip my dahlias in boiling water — their stems are too delicate for that. Some growers do a quick dip in very hot (not boiling) water for half a minute, then move them to cold water, which can help with vase life. But most important is cutting them fresh, giving a clean recut, and changing the water often. :D

By the way, some plants with hollow or sappy stems (like sunflowers, poppies, euphorbia) benefit from searing the stem end in boiling water or briefly with a flame, because it helps seal the stem, stops sap leakage, and prolongs vase life.
