Marie great advice. I never buy compost by the bag. I buy it by the truck load from recycling yard debrie lots.

make sure to inspect it first. i made the mistake once of bringing in some compost without looking at it first and to make it even worse i had them mix it with some topsoil first. i didn't know how bad it was until i started watering the new gardens and started seeing all these bits of metal, plastics, glass all over the place. i'm still picking pieces of all this crap out of my gardens 15yrs later...

i also do not recommend using any kind of combined sewage sludge leftovers because if it has a lot of metals or other gunk in it you won't know unless you get it tested before using it.

sadly there are still a lot of public works facilities that use combined storm water and sewage debris and sludge and it's just not something you want in your gardens or on your land.

and then there are also some fertilizer manufacturers which will use whatever fillers they can get for as cheap as possible and those can be almost anything and also contain various contaminants.

When I was a kid, our long time next door neighbor died of this. He was a big time gardener but was using some kind of sewage as a fertilizer. I have no idea why he thought this was a good idea. He contracted something from that which killed him. Tragic.
