Today in History

March 26 is Make Up Your Own Holiday Day.

I purpose World Dirt Day.

World Soil Day is in December. That's fine but beyond the end of the growing season for northern hemisphere gardeners.

Your ideas for a holiday? Dig in.
That sounds good for today! How about for tomorrow's holiday let's call it refurbish an old gardening tool day!

The Volstead Act has a fascinating history. Beer distilleries never stopped making beer during Prohibition, they just made "near beer", as per law. It takes several months to brew beer, and, when prohibition was repealed, they were staged to make real beer again, quickly. Therefore, celebrations where Americans drank beer at bars happened fast.
Getting rid of Prohibition was probably the best thing that FDR ever did. Momentarily, the American economy was bolstered. I am NOT a fan of FDR! Why did he not pull the country OUT of the Depression?!? It took WWII to do that. 90% of the wealthy financially supported everybody else. THAT's where they get this idea of taking the rich.
He was too much of a control freak and couldn't get beyond his political ambitions. Typical politician, FDR did his best work months before his re elections.
The good work done by government hiring was outshone by the sloth. This is even documented by a Fred McMurray film, when his character travels by car from New York to Ohio, and remarks how the same road is Still closed for repair, as it had been one year previously.
We, in IL, call this "Construction Season," from March to November, where is takes F.O.R.E.V.E.R. for road repairs to be finished, then they start all over again 3 years later bc of poor workmanship and crummy materials, ALWAYS taking the lowest bid.
Planned obsolescence.
