I actually have both. 'tators in big semi-truck tires and 'maters and peppers in regular sized tires. I have an unlimited supply, I figured why not try it. The only thing I'm really worried about is drainage.
I'm planting the flower bed in front of my house with herbs and other fun plants for my kids. Beside my garden I'm planting a giant sunflower patch with the middle left open and pole beans in front that will grow up the sunflowers. Each one of my kids have a raised bed of their own that they...
I'm ashamed of how trashy mine look now that I've looked at everyone else's beds. :hide
Onions, broccoli, and kohlrabi are looking really good. Tomatoes and peppers finally in the ground (er...tires). The potatoes are still hiding, I should probably go check them tomorrow, I...
I want to try planting mine in tires this year. My biggest concern is when you use some type of tower for your potatoes how do you water them? I have this picture in my head of the potatoes near the top of the tower being too wet and the ones at the bottom being too dry.
I always use Valentines Day as my date to start planting peas and potatoes so that I can have new potatoes and peas for Easter. According to the UGA planting chart, it is actually getting late for English peas. It gets too hot too fast for peas to produce well if I wait until the end of Feb.
I received mine today also. The pictures are gorgeous! More like a magazine than a catalog. There are so many things I want to try, but I really want to narrow it down to one of each type so I can save the seeds. Oh the decisions!!
I finished harvesting one of my raised beds of potatoes this weekend. If I replant them will they sprout in this heat? I live in middle GA, the highs right now are in the upper 90's and the lows in the upper 70's.
My kids are notorious for running around barefoot and stepping on bees in the clover. So when ever they get stung DH takes some chewing tobacco out of his mouth and puts it on the sting. I thought it was the grossest thing in the world! But last week I was thinning out the corn and got stung...
We tried using the tires several years ago and had a problem with lack of water. The tires got so hot that the straw would dry out much faster than the dirt in the garden and I just didn't water it enough. If I were to do it again, I wouldn't use straight straw/hay, I'd use more compost. But...
I use pine straw in my flower beds and around my trees, but not in my vegetable garden. It takes longer to break down than the wheat straw does and it's more expensive if you have to buy it.
