My best crop is beets grown in ordinary garden dirt. The trick is to 'hill them up' meaning if you see the top of the beet poking up above the soil, pile some dirt on top to cover it, same with carrots - only the green parts should be sticking out of the soil.

Most seed companies that sell non GMO seeds will have a 'safe seed pledge' or some similar notice in the catalog. If you're buying on the web, there should be a declaration somewhere on the site about the company's stance on GMO's. If you can't find it, best to buy somewhere else.

The latch always strikes me as flimsy every time I open it to dump stuff in. Oddly, they are holding up fine after 5 years, so I haven't had to rig anything up. Should it break, I think an eyehook would fix it. The rollers are spaced so that when you spin it, it won't catch on the base.

year 1)I bought a tiller, had a truckload of compost delivered, bought seeds & starter plants. A few things did well, others never came up. The deer ate a lot of stuff.
year 2) Bought 6" fencing & posts to go all the way...
