    Root crops?

My best crop is beets grown in ordinary garden dirt. The trick is to 'hill them up' meaning if you see the top of the beet poking up above the soil, pile some dirt on top to cover it, same with carrots - only the green parts should be sticking out of the soil. I always roast my beets in a huge...

How can I know if the seeds are GM?

Most seed companies that sell non GMO seeds will have a 'safe seed pledge' or some similar notice in the catalog. If you're buying on the web, there should be a declaration somewhere on the site about the company's stance on GMO's. If you can't find it, best to buy somewhere else. Bountiful...

    Best portable composter

The latch always strikes me as flimsy every time I open it to dump stuff in. Oddly, they are holding up fine after 5 years, so I haven't had to rig anything up. Should it break, I think an eyehook would fix it. The rollers are spaced so that when you spin it, it won't catch on the base. Edited...

    Is food cheaper to grow?

I started from scratch a few years ago, and it was pretty expensive. year 1)I bought a tiller, had a truckload of compost delivered, bought seeds & starter plants. A few things did well, others never came up. The deer ate a lot of stuff. year 2) Bought 6" fencing & posts to go all the way...

I poked around in the freezer this weekend & realized I've got a ton of roasted beets to eat. (Genius me planted them all at the same time last spring ) So a big cauldron of Borsht is in the near future.......

Save those seeds from your grocery store fresh vegs!! FREE SEED!

I always buy my pototoes, garlic & shallots for planting from a store that sells organic produce (usually Whole Foods). That way you know the stuff has not been treated with anything (or irradiated) to retard growth & no pesticides or chemicals are on them either. It is much less expensive to...

    Gurney vs Parks

Rusty, Gurney's is based in Ohio, on the border of Indiana. Your location has a lot to do with it........mainly the type of soil you have. When I lived in PA, I could throw any kind of seed around and it would grow. I moved to VA, brought some plants with me & everything died. The soil down...

    Best Mint for Peppermint Tea

I too thought peppermint was just peppermint. True peppermint can't be grown from seed (it's sterile) only from cuttings. I've tried other types of mints, but for tea peppermint is the best. I planted mine and surrounded it with bricks to keep it contained. It moves around in the bricked in...

What Are Your Plans For Your Garden This Spring

Two things I'll do differently: 1)Not plant all the seeds at once! Processing 2 bushels of beets that matured all at the same time was a pain. Piles of cucumbers, piles of zuchini, piles of lettuce, spinach, radishes & stringbeans. I got so tired of watermelon that I took the rest out to the...

    Mint reseeding

Thanks Hattie! Can't wait to try the syrup. I grow peppermint, (which does not produce seeds), so I just bought a few plants and surrounded an area with bricks. The mint has not strayed out of the area but every year it seems to migrate around in there, I guess it likes soil it has not used...

    Carrots, carrots, carrots....

I put 'em all in a big roasting pan & roast at 350 for about an hour (depending on carrot size), then freeze. They have a deeper flavor that way and they are ready to use after thawing.

Air rising in jars just canned

All sounds normal........air should rise and they should seal as they cool. You may not hear every pop, but when the jars reach room temp, check to make sure they all sealed. If one didn't, put it in the fridge and eat it fairly soon. If you have a lot that did not seal, they may not have...
