There was a shower upstairs, but it got cancelled with the lower roof.
i didn't even blink because i thought the context was enough to tell me it was a poolhouse or outbuilding related to that...

I found a free metal swing set frame recently. I'm going add some twine and stakes and use this to grow my beans and peas on this year! Hoping I can get it, the seller told me to check back in a couple weeks because its in a snowbank right now. Looking at another foot of snow this weekend, so it may be awhile.

I lived on Westover Plantation for several years and part of the self-guided tour was through the 5-seater elevated outhouse - with a fireplace. Elevated because it was some poor person's job to go in the lower door and clean out underneath so that it never got toooo stinky. It always seemed odd to me that the 'gentry' had no problem sitting hip to hip doing their business but didn't want to smell it...

the elevated design is still popular in places where they have been trying out composting methods. much easier to just move the containers around than to have to scoop out the leavin's.
in a well done dry composting system you shouldn't smell all that much of anything. each time you use it you're supposed to scoop some dry stuff over the deposits. sawdust is a good material to use if you can get it. a little dirt mixed with other dry organic materials is pretty good too, but heavier.
i think if you grew up used to doing your business next to the other family members or whoever else was around you'd not really care. when you gotta go you gotta go...
