2024 Little Easy Bean Network - Growing Heirloom Beans Of Today And Tomorrow

Hello everyone and hello @Bluejay ,
I just wanted to say that the network beans safely arrived. This is always so much fun! If I had something to decide I would let start springtime right away.

The Fothergill's seed packet stated the variety 'has the potential for some self-pollination', so I presume so.

i'm working on making up samples for the seed swap so i hope to not be caught short. today i went through 90 Purple Dove samples to make sure i had the obvious clinkers out of them.

the seeds of PD are not uniform in size and i don't screen them to remove the extra tiny or the overly large ones (we eat them all ). so as i am not using my special seed selections to put these samples together i have to look at them a bit more closely (again - this would be the fourth time i've sorted through them).

i'll make up another pile of samples tomorrow as a mix of several fresh eating beans (including more PD), if i get another full tray of samples out of that it would be nice, but i'm not sure i have that many other seeds of the fresh eating beans to fill up 30 samples. i will answer that question tomorrow.

i also do have some extra seeds i can include which would be mystery hopeful first generation and also some which might be questionable and wondering if it would be fun to include them (of course telling people there may be some that may not work as well as the others). maybe i will do half the tray as proven edibles and then do the other half with the mysteries... hmmm... that too i shall figure out tomorrow.

Been taking some bean photos lately, some of beans that are not fresh but I don't have any pictures of them so I have to make due with photos of older seed, others I never got to in the fall. I think there's a few in this bunch I haven't posted on LEBN yet.

For whatever reason this bean gave me trouble, and the seed wasn't as well formed as I like back in 2022. I managed to get some decent seed though. Will need to grow these out again, after I complete growing out the other few hundred ahead on the list, lol.

I read that this bean was selected from Red Cranberry the pole bean, and when I took the pictures and looked closely at them, they really do look like it even though they're bushes. Seeds are less round, but the texture is there and the color.

Bean mail today. There is this lady in Germany who posted this bean on one of the bean groups on Facebook. I thought it was kind of neat so I traded her some beans to get it. She says it's a mutation of the black and white native Americn bean that we know as Skunk. Says it has grown true to type for 4 seasons now. She was calling the bean Yellow Flagg but wasn't sure if she liked that name. I suggested Golden Skunk or Chester's Gold. She liked Chester's Gold so that is what the bean will be known as from that day forward. She also sent me a small white pole bean about the size of a navy bean called Sonnstagbohne

I have Chester's Gold on my garden plans for this summer.

I have grow a limited amount of heritage beans over the last couple of year. Which was so much fun. But I now have a allotment, which has a lot more space than my garden did! I'm so excited for the growing season this year and the opportunity to bulk up on pretty beans 🫘

Excitement for pretty beans, I can so relate! I can't wait for the upcoming season to start, I have so many great beans in the 2024 line up. Do you have any special new beans planned for your allotment?
