There were only two growers of Pinktip Greasy in 2025. One was in Michigan. They live a little bit north of Kalamazoo. They returned seed that looked a lot like yours and a note that said too long for my climate. The other grower was in Iowa on about the same latitude as Cedar Rapids and they had...

Russ's 2025 Big Bean Show Day 17 Cold Creek - Bush Dry - This bean was a segregation of it's seed mother in 2019 which I was also calling Cold Creek. Grew it again in '20,21,25. By 2021 I seemed to be stable so I decided to use the seed mothers name for this bean. Not a lot of seed this past...

I've never noticed if the Zinnias caused the beans to produce better. I had 4 rows of semi runners last summer and one row of beans was the closest to the row of Zinnias and on the shadow side of the Zinnias. The entire row of beans didn't produce as well as the other three rows. However just...

Russ's 2025 Big Bean Show Day 16 Chickasaw - Semi Runner Dry. I discovered this bean in a Sulphur bean which was a bush. I still think I can see a slight yellowishness to the tan base color of some of it's seeds that it inherited from the Sulphur bean. This bean grew close to a row of Zinnias...

Russ's 2025 Big Bean Show Day 15 Cherry Trout - Bush Dry. This bean struggled during the summer of 2025. It also didn't like the weather and possibly the soil too. I got enough seed to plant again. This is an original bean of mine from the early 1980's. It is in the Seed Saver's Exhange bean...

Russ's 2025 Big Bean Show Day 14 Cherokee - Semi Runner Dry. In early September 2011 I was browsing on the internet and I clicked on a website called Urban Harvest from Texas. I think this organization is still around today. They were closing out their seed catalog and all the seeds in it...

Yes it is but I still consider this an original bean of mine. This bean is about 10 generations removed from any of the last saved beans that Robert collected in his grow outs. Ron Thuma was next to get a hold of those last Lobitz beans and grew them out for 5 generations. Robert never saw this...

Russ's 2025 Big Bean Show Day 13 Cedar Lake - Bush Dry. A Robert Lobtiz original named bean. I grew it in 2023 and thought I would like to have a bit more seed. It took a beating this past summer. I think it was one of those beans that didn't like not only the weather but the location. 15...

Russ's 2025 Big Bean Show Day 12 Buxton Buckshot - Pole Dry. This bean is so similar to Seneca Bird Egg. Same seed, same looking pods, same plants, but maybe a week or two earlier in maturity. A bean from Buxton, Maine. I wonder often if it is a native American bean. This bean gets steady...

Russ's 2025 Big Bean Show Day 10 Blue Spitball - Pole Dry. Got this bean from one of our seed swap ladies about 6 years ago. It grew fairly well in 2020 the first time I grew. This past summer the little bitty plants looks so sad. They grew lower to the ground than a Tepary bean. It's a...

Garry Greene wrote to me last night and told me something about my post #164 in regards to the bean Blue Pacific. He says Blue & White of Bernardo was the seed mother and Viola Di Assiago might have been the pollen donor.

Grow lights work for tomato plants and they must require just as much intensity of light as beans do. If you have grow lights try it and see what happens. I would think bush bean would be the best one to try because they are smaller.

Russ's 2025 Big Bean Show Day 8 Bird Egg Blue - Bush Dry. Surprisingly this bean did very well in a place where some beans I grew wouldn't even give me one well fill out seed. A bean I discovered and named in the early 1980's. Plants of this bean in the right soil can grow up to 2 feet tall (60...
