I'm planning to grow mangel beets this year in the garden, mostly for the chickens and goats, see here: http://www.betterhensandgardens.com/2011/05/11/growing-mangel-beets-for-chickens/
I was wondering if others had experience with this vegetable, and has anyone used them for anything other than...
You can certainly use straw, or a mix of things like leaves. I think this describes what you are trying to do, and it works just fine: http://www.betterhensandgardens.com/2010/05/02/planting-potatoes-lazy-bed-method/ :welcome
Thanks for the link - I've got the bedding from the winter goat stall and chicken coop to start composting for next falls garden - so very timely info
:thumbsup
Also, the cuber she's got in her catalog I obtained from Johnny's Selected Seeds and have just begun experimenting with it...
That's a great suggestion, never would have thought of it myself. I can start them in the soil blocks, then transplant to old nursery containers. And it will help get the old containers out of the trash too. :thumbsup
I was toying with starting herb seedlings and selling them at market this year, and was wondering what was the best (inexpensive) containers/method to use for starting the seedlings and selling them.
I'm planning to use soil blocks to start my garden seedlings, but that doesn't seem like a...
This was my blog last year on the things I wanted to change to reduce oil consumption, live more sustainably: http://www.betterhensandgardens.com/2010/02/05/11-ways-to-save-in-2010/
I haven't done one for this year, but this reminds me I need to start thinking about it! :/
I just put some interesting information I discovered about what "baby" carrots really are on my blog. :barnie Thought many here might be interested, and might plant more carrots this year too - I will be! http://www.betterhensandgardens.com/2011/03/09/baby-carrots-well-not-exactly
I'm so glad it's helpful, the "#Wks to set out vs. frost free date" is how many weeks before or after the the last frost free date that transplants or seeds should be put in the garden.
So, for peas, it says they can be set out 6 - 8 weeks before the last frost free date because peas are cold...
I'm not familiar with orach either, does it have to be cooked to add to salad, or can you just eat the greens?
Something that withstands the cold, is this early, and tastes good you would think everyone would know about? :/
I got my seeds from them (Baker Creek) today too! And, they included the same free celery in my order too. I was thinking of trying some celery, but didn't order; and here the nice folks sent me some anyway :weee
I have to organize everything, including when my seeds need to start, get planted in the garden, etc. so each year I create a seed starting and planting schedule. This year I posted it along with a template and instructions for making your own here...
The list of seeds I ordered is here: http://www.betterhensandgardens.com/2011/02/09/vegetable-seeds-for-the-2011-garden-2/ and it ended up costing me $46.00, that's not including seed potatoes.
I plan to start saving more, but last year's garden was not very good due to deer damage. This...
We're growing the blue lake beans again this year too, and I agree with the previous posts, beans don't cross pollinate that readily.
I wrote a little bit on seed saving here: http://www.betterhensandgardens.com/2010/01/29/heirloom-vegetables-better-for-the-backyard-garden-2/
If you read down...
I'm really happy about the E-Z-GO too, our house is at the top of the hill - and it's a fairly steep hike down to the level garden/field - it should make the thought of working in the garden after a day at work a little less daunting. It's already made getting the compost to the garden about...
We're looking forward to some warmer weather finally too; and my name is spelled "Lesa"! I agree, very seldom do I see it spelled that way, and I always notice your posts because of it. :)
