Oh, I don't feel like I have to do any of it. I want to do it. Some of the best memories I have are of watching the "grown-up's" talk about life while making some special dish that has been time-tested and passed down thru generations. Or watching as they try some totally new thing. Every once...

    Useful Lint

We mainly use the fireplace in the winter for our heat. A few years ago I learned of a way to utilize the lint from our dryer. Since we no longer have a dryer we get some from the local laundromat. Add a paper egg carton and some parafin and you have your very own fire starters! First you...

    Traditions

It is quiet this morning. All but the youngest are still asleep. There is a fire going in the fireplace as I sit to sip my first cup of coffee. When I think of Thanksgiving I think of how my family would all pack in the car, drive an insane amount of miles to go to my Mammaw's house for dinner...

    Help I Need A Nurse!

It will hurt like hell but I would soak it in some Epsoms salt water. Then the ibuprophen should help some with the swelling. Sorry you hurt yourself. I hurt my thumb a while back by shoving a minor PLANK of wood under the nail all the way under my cuticle. Then it broke off. I couldn't get...

Hey Joe! Glad you got some good wodd. We have SO much out there from our tree-trimming friends that we use only a couple of space heaters and a fireplace for heat. You will be glad to know that upon your advice I pulled those paper mulberry starts up and tossed them aside the same day...

I will have to do some digging and see what I can find out about toxicity levels. Because I would really like to plant them. I just have a lot of time, effort, EMOTION, and $$ tied up in my goats so I am nervous whenever I read that something is poisonous. So, I will do some research and then...

If it wasn't for my goats I would grow them. Heaven knows there are worse things to be afraid of. But I can't knowingly take the chance some bird will eat the berries, deposit the seeds in a goat pen (I have 3 goat pens) then one day I go out and find a dead goat or a very sick one because I...

No, doesn't help much at all....lol. In my 3rd pic posted do I have it planted in a big red planter or a big black planter?

Which is the privet? :idunno The shrubs were actually DH's idea but I figured what the heck - they are supposedly fast-growing (according to our friend) and we thought they would make a nice north property-line wind break.... But now upon reading about them I see they poisonous. That clinches...

Yesterday was a FANTASTIC score day for me! Roger and I went yardsaling (is that even a word?) and stopped at a friends house to pick up milk jugs and egg cartons. OMG, she had SO MANY things that I HAD to HAVE! By the time we left there was no more room in the back of our old Volvo wagon...

    Propagating Cyperus alternifolius

I have read it can be grown as an indoor plant - have you ever tried that?

Ron, I have a question about your umbrella grass. Does it die back in the winter then come back in the spring or does it stay green-healthy even thru winter?

    Roof Garden Option

I think a roof garden would be cool! Corn would do great as they have shallow root systems. Green beans, cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli are also shallow. For tomatoes I would go at least 20-24" deep. Same for peppers. But for most other things I think 16-18" would do fine. I don't know...

what about a U pick it garden?

I think I agree with Steve. Not only how many baskets of food would go unpaid for but I would worry about the potential for unsavory people scoping things out and coming back to carry away things that aren't bolted down. I would love to do a u-pick it but I would be afraid of being stolen blind.

Tell me everything you know about...

I like cottonwood trees. Here, they are fast-growing and somewhat invasive but not as bad as a hackberry. The worst of the cottonwoods are the little fluff-ball things floating in the air. They (the fluff-balls) can be nightmare if you have a pool. Since they grow fast it's not long before you...
