Texan--You have me laughing out loud over the "poo" issue :) I must be a bonified parent--it doesn't even make me bat an eye anymore, or "potty."
Glad you asked about chicken feces ;) since it's a question I've been wanting more clearly answered for a while, actually since having chickens. As...
It looks like homesteadmom in Arizona grows it (the post right before yours). Sounds like it might work! The catalogues would give a range of zones where asparagus grows.

I just heard these mentioned for the first time at an organic grower's meeting I was at. It was just in passing, so this is great timing. I will definitely be looking into these. Egg shells and cartons are great, but...
Well, that's what I thought, but I also learn something new every day :) Not this time, though, it turns out.
Last year, I simply planted too early. The tomatoes were beauties but still got a bit long before transplanting. Here's one that you all may not have done: To fit my eggshell tomato...
Sounds good, but I'm betting you will have better luck with your sun and warmth. On the other hand, if my memory serves me, they are a shorter grower, right? So maybe they don't need as much as some melons. I figure if the French foodies love them, I will be in for a treat!
So THAT'S why I can never find anything good at my library sales! :D Thanks for the recommendation from those of us still coping with snow and ice, a month away from even starting stuff INdoors.
Can you tell me more about this? I can't find it online, unless you're referring to "savoy" instead of "savory." How would it grow up north in zone 4? If it would, I would be interested in trading for beets. I have Detroit, Forono, Chioggia (striped) and golden. Thanks!
Homesteadmom--I got charentais seeds this year, too. It will be fun to see if they are as incredibly delicious as promised :) It's great trying these varieties that never make it to the grocery stores because of shippability, storage, lack of uniformity.
Isn't it crazy? I think of that sometimes when I'm waiting on tomatoes from plants I have been babying for 6 months. Incredible when they make it all the way.
Floating row covers have brought me tremendous peace of mind. They protect from pests (insect and mammalian) and frost, somewhat from...
Does anybody have a reputable mail-order fruit source in Southern Canada/midwestern US? Every year, those beautiful photos just pull me in and I start dreaming. Mmmmmm.... Paw-paws, currants, blueberries, strawberries, plums. Oh, yum!
Then, reality hits. They arrive in April/May, dead-looking...
Thanks, Pat and Robbobbin. I have some thinking and research to do. Wish this snow would melt so I could get a better look at where/how I need to do this!
I was reading one of Michael Pollan's books while riding through IA last summer. It was about monocropping in IA--and I surely was completely surrounded by corn and soybeans! There's most that here, too, but an incredible number of small CSA and organic farms popping up everywhere :)
By the...
Does anybody know the details of creating one of these, what plants really suck up the water?
In central WI last summer, we had terrible flooding. Our yard is at the base of a bluff, fairly level, so it and my gardens were okay. However, once the bluff water picked up speed, the no-till fields...
Hey Kellygirrl--I'm just awful with directions and geography. I'm about 45 min from Madison. Is that by New Glarus?
I just posted to an old thread I had about unusual produce. Maybe you can find some great ideas there!
Ooh, ooh! I just got a fruit catalogue from Miller Nursery and am ready to drop about $500 on unusual fruit trees and bushes!!! Not really, but it is so tempting. Until I get piles of fruit come May and wonder how on earth I will find the time to properly tend to them all.
Anyway, I would like...
