i got to hang out with my brother, SIL and nephew yesterday for a while and my nephew has a 3yr old golden retriever. nice doggy, very fixated on playing fetch. Mom was not happy with the dog being there, but she survived.
we have so many lady bugs (a few kinds) here that i rarely see aphids. i never call any kind of aphid a fly.
the black flies here are viscious little creatures - we have a few once in a while, up north they are really horrible (and one of the main reasons why when i finally left there i was...
yes, deer like comfrey and they really really like hostas (which are good eating for people too :) ).
the only gardens deer leave alone here are surrounded by fences - even plants that are not supposed to be grazed by deer are still once in a while sampled or trampled by them.
ants do farm aphids, but i've never heard about them farming black flies of any kind, are you sure of that? fungus gnats may be cohabitants without actually being farmed (if those are the black flies you are indicating).
i need to get back to the gardens again today and it has been dry enough i'll need to do a little watering. this week there are chances of rain enough i may not have to water much, but we'll see how that goes.
yeah, this is the time of the year when i go out to garden with a small towel becuase my nose drips so much. the good thing is that when i come inside and rinse out my sinuses and wash my face within a few minutes it calms down.
those seeds do blow around a lot and it comes up here each season, luckily it is not too hard to remove and i dig holes to bury weeds that aren't troublesome so they go in those holes with the rest of the weeds. pretty much free fertilizer. :)
the groundhogs will eat the tops if they can't...
