I plant winter kale and swiss chard from seeds which my chickens just love. If you are in an area where you can grow winter brococoli, they go crazy for the leaves and if the plants bolt for any reason, I just pull them up and my chickens get the whole thing.
I plant in my garden area which is...
Rosalind and Silkie,
Thank you so much. I appreciate your responses. I will leave some of the double little ears on the stalk and see what happens. I did plant too close, I think and will change that for next year. One thing I won't do again is plant painted corn next to the eating corn....I...
This is the first time I have tried corn, and planted several different kinds this year. I am harvesting now. Some of the stalks have produced one large full ear or corn and other stalks have produced a second ear but it appears to be immature, and much smaller.
My questions for the...
Hi Cottage Gardner: You are pretty close to me....I am just across the Bay from you. I have noticed a severe shortage of birds this year, have you noticed in your area as well?
We used to have dozens and dozens of hummingbirds last year and noticed this year perhaps 1/2 dozen at best. Last...
Years ago, I started out with a supply of co-ordinated short and long sleeved cotton shirts, tan colored cotton pants, a cute floppy hat and a pair of cotton gardening gloves and new tennis shoes........HA. That lasted a week maybe.
Between the chicken coop and yard, an often muddy veg garden...
Here is a floor bouquet I made with my sunflowers. This is the vest vase I have ever had, standing some 5 feet tall. It can really show off large flowers. There are jokers, red sun, teddybear and valentine sunflowers along with my giant marigolds and the tops of my corn plants.
Oh how I wish I lived near you. You have some good suggestions here, I would chop and saute the peppers and onions together with a little olive oil and then freeze. Would be a perfect thing to add to tomato sauce. I am very envious........

Thank you Kate, Pat and Punkin. I will freeze as instructed. I had a friend over for lunch today and the corn was the biggest hit. Like candy......
Yum....there might not be any left over for freezing.......

I am experimenting with canning and freezing some of my corn to see which method give the best flavor. I have canned a couple of small jars and now want to try and freeze some.
My questions? How do I do that?
Cook the corn first on the cob? how long?
Take the corn off the cob, cook? how...
Sunflowers. This year I planted 5 different varieties along my driveway where they had lots of room and full sun. They are spectacular. Joker is my favorite, followed by Red Sun, TeddyBear and Valentine. I even planted a number of the huge ones. So easy to tell visitors, "come up the road, and...
I love growing carrots, but hate the cleaning. The soil in my garden is clay-like so when I harvest, the carrots are quite muddy. There must be an easier way than hosing, soaking and scrubbing....please tell me there is.....

I just made this with apples instead of the pears and it is even better. Or perhaps it was the addition of the ice cream.......I did not add the ginger. Now, we can call this pear or apple crumble. I just love dual receipes.
