    Horse Manure

I have access to horse manure, so I compost it. I do big piles, 12 foot around and 6 feet high piles and turn them weekly. (Tractor) Keep the "fire" burning by bringing in material from the outside into the core of the pile. Also bringing in oxygen so I get a nice low odor, aerobic compost...

    Heat Retension at Sub-zero

Yes our summers are generally and cool and sometimes short. I roll back the cover during the warmest two months of summer, but if we have a stretch of nights in the 40' I will put the cover back on. The first and foremost function of the greenhouse is to allow me to grow and ripen tomatoes...

How to grow seedlings with strong healthy stems under lights?

That spinach does not look bad to me! I find spinach is very tough to start indoors without a spindly stem.. Even with 5000 lumen per square foot! Here is some thoughts: Maybe rotate the trays to keep them moving different directions. Also look at the reflectors on those lights see if you can...

I have ordered from them... Very unique selection if you are into OP/heirloom and herbs. I have however never ordered Quinoa seed from them.. I ordered from a company not listed, and the seed was the smallest quinoa seed I have ever seen... It performed marginally for me. (Not necessarily the...

    peat moss substitute?

I just put the fence around the garden instead of around the chickens..;) IMO it is OK to till while you are still building the soil. Double digging organic matter deep in. Once you have the bed established then avoid deep digging, as to not harm the worms and micro life. Free ammendments...

I get to have a worm bin in the basement!

I have huge gardens too.. I never have enough castings! However for me it is very worth while. (I have two rubbermaid totes made into worm bins.) I make my own seed starting mix which is 50% worm castings and 50% vermiculite. Anything left goes to help your "pet" plants of the season.. I...

    Worm composting area ideas???????

The run off from the worm bin is absolute gold.....:D Even better than worm casting tea.. I bubble the worm bin run off a day or so and it really foams up with biological life.. I too think an open bottom would dry out too fast... Seperating worms from castings is so time consuming... I am...

Ya ya.. So true Chris....ouch that hurts... :lau S' I hear what you are saying! You sure are right about the dark, I am at 46 Lat and on the edge of the Lake Superior snow belt. It is often that we do not see the dismal weak sun for more than a few hours a week from November through January...

    best simple grow light setup?

Wendy that sounds OK on the lumens. Just be sure to keep the bulbs within 4 inches of the crop. On lettuce not being crisp try a different kind. Like I said on the other thread Multy works great and is very crisp. http://www.kitchengardenseeds.com/cgi-bin/catview.cgi?_fn=Product&_category=180...

    Heat Retension at Sub-zero

I have a 12x48 single layer hoop house, with 3 raised beds in it. I covered the 4' center bed with a second layer of hoops and plastic. (Sort of a mini quonset inside the big quonset. Inside the center hoop frost is 2 inches out of the ground. That inner hoop buys me a couple extra weeks to...

Hi, I grow lettuce indoors under lights. I produce about 10 lbs a week for a local store. I have the capability for about 20 lbs a week. (Yet to reach that level yet.) Anyway. I use either modified permanest trays or home made flood and drain tables. I plant in my own soil mix that has...

    The Great Cold Frame Experiment

Something to consider regarding the cold frame... Is RODENTS... My overwintering crops have been devastated by voles... (Primarily all the Brassicas) green food at a warmer temp than the surrounding area seems to have called all the pests in for dinner...:( ON
