My new favorite "wild" herb (yes, even better than dandelion)

I think I'll let the things grow around here that look a bit like that, and see what happens. Thanks for posting about this.

    planting mint

I grow mine in containers. My neighbor has those curved, concrete edgings and the mint grows in the circle. He has grass outside the circle and mows it. So, I don't know definitely how well the concrete edging contains the mint, but it seems to. Others use bricks, stones, etc.

    Lemon balm

It's used as a healing tonic for wounds. Very soothing. Just make a strong tea from the fresh leaves.

    Best way to fertilize tomatoes?

OaklandCityFarmer, thanks for the info. The PVC pipe sounds like it would be a good idea. I found out last year that I needed to water more than I had been, and that they got sunburned easily. This year they are on the deck and have a bit of shade for part of the day. They have those sturdy...

    pickled beets

I use cooked, sliced beets. Put them in a sterile jar. Fill to brim with white vinegar and distilled water. I use two-thirds vinegar and one-third water. You can make the proportions however you like. I add a pinch of sea salt and a pinch of stevia. Just wait for the jars to cool, and put...

    Lemon balm

Mine is in a container with chives and greek oregano. I have to keep my edibles surrounded by chicken wire or the squirrels, cats, geese, and rabbits eat/ruin them all.

    Stevia

I bought mine at Lowe's. Bought two plants. They are in a container on my deck. I eat a few leaves almost every morning. I know someone who makes a concentrated tea from the leaves and uses that to bake with. Anyone know if stevia is a perennial like other herbs?

"Venomous" Roses? (Yes, I R STUPID)

I use hydrogen peroxide and if that doesn't do it, then tincture of iodine. Roses take so much work and the thorns can be a problem. I've given away a few of rose bushes because of how much work they are.

    Best way to fertilize tomatoes?

Thanks, everyone! I figured it was partly the container. It is a good-sized one. I'm using pine bark and cypress bark as mulch. I'll try the fish emulsion and post a report.

    Best way to fertilize tomatoes?

I have Better Boys growing in containers. The plants aren't growing very large and I'm not getting many blossoms or fruit. Had the same trouble last year. The plants seem to be healthy, the fruit tastes fine, tho' it's smaller than Better Boys are intended to be. Can I fertilize with fish...

Deer are eating my tomato plants.

Some people hang up Irish Spring soap in the trees, or put it in little metal cages. It keeps deer away. There are more surefire methods, but it depends on the laws where you live.
