American Chestnut

After finding out my grandmom's table was made out of chestnut, I wanted to plant one in her memory. I learned of chestnut blight in American chestnut, once one of the most common hardwoods here now only 2,500 in West Salem Wisconsin. In 40 years 4 billion trees where devastated. It is believe the blight was brought over in some trees from Japan. I will never complain about import laws again !!

What a huge loss that was!
It looks like they've developed a blight resistant American chestnut.
I don't know when it would be commercially available. Did you find any NYboy?

@Nyboy There is an American Chestnut tree at our local county park. Each fall we try to pick up a few of the dropped seeds. We have had no luck getting any to grow. Maybe Someday.

I did a quick check on ebay, and there are quite a few people offering American chestnuts; both seeds and plants (http://www.ebay.com/sch/Yard-Garden...i.html?_from=R40|R40&_nkw="american+chestnut")
Bear in mind though, that quite a few are American chestnut hybrids (or of uncertain parentage) so it may help to be up on how to tell dentate from all of the other species.
