This looks like an interesting medicinal herb. Good for coughs and sinus headaches. It looks very much like mint- so I am wondering if it will take over the world? Anyone in zone 4ish growing this herb?

Rusty, I'd appreciate some hints on planting Horehound if you could.
Did you start it from seed? I put some in a plot at our last house and it didn't grow very well. I think the area was too shady for it or perhaps it was just too wet that year? I now have a nice sunny herb patch and might try it again.

I've tried to grow it but it doesn't seem to like San Diego weather. It never does well for me. In other parts of the country once you learn what it looks like you may find you already have it and have been pulling it as a weed. I wish I could grow it. It's a great bee and predatory wasp favorite when it blooms.

It grows wild EVERYWHERE out here! We have tons of it all over our property. I'm in the Sierras. We have well-drained but mostly clay soil. It also grows all along the American River and in wild areas all around Sacramento and northern California.
It is NASTY tasting. It works like magic for coughs and colds. I think it's because it is so bitter, it chases the "sick" right outta ya!

It's a member of the "Mint" family....square shape stems.....it's very hardy...comes back each year...sometimes from the original plants and also from lots of seeds. It's VERY medicinal....beautiful little white flowers along the stem joints...(on second yr. plants).... I like it's look and flavor.....and so glad I was introduced to it so many years ago. lesa....remind me later this Spring when we have nicer weather...I'll send you a couple of young plants and some seeds.......
