We planted 8 Asparagus Crowns 3 years ago in an area I thought would be perfect for them. Now, after re-configuring our yard, I have changed my mind. I need to move them if possible. It is springs and has been very warm here in Colorado, but we haven't seen anything coming up yet.

So, questions:
Can I move them to another location without killing them or having to wait another 3 years for them to be big enough to eat?
How soon should I move them?
How should I approach moving them?
Best kind of soil for me to move them into?
Best location for them to be?
How far apart do they "really" need to be spaced?
How deep?

Any help with this would be great!

Thanks All!

If possible, I wouldn't do anything until later this summer, when they are done. We moved ours last summer, around July to our new house. We gave each about 2-3 feet of space around, and have had lots of new shoots coming up so far. I heard asparagus doesn't transplant well, so I was worried, but so far-so good.

you can transplant but expect them to take a while to produce well...[a couple of years]

they always say to have a rich soil deeply dug for asparagas remember they are going to be in that spot for 15 -20 years

Finding this thread now is funny timing, since I just had to move my asparagus yesterday. It was an emergency, since they are in my community garden spot and were somehow getting knocked over and broken. The most recently broken one was 5 ft long and broke off near the ground. :somad

They were planted near the edge of the raised bed, so stuff could easily bump them when people are going by, but I wish people would be more careful. :tongue

I moved them into the middle of the bed and gave them a tomato cage to help protect them. Now, I hope they will forgive me for moving them and grow happily again.

Thanks for the advice.
I tried to get a really big root ball for each one. I hope they will be safe and happy in their new spot.
We have milder winters down here, so the ground doesn't really freeze. I was more worried, cause they are Not dormant now. I was afraid that would make the transplanting riskier.
