Can we save this tree?

We noticed this a couple of weeks ago. We love this tree. My husband was wondering if he could bolt it to keep it from splitting more or breaking. Is there anything we can do or does it just have to come down?

I had two different sets of trees that grew together like that. In the hurricane last year they split apart and inside the joined area was a BIG hollow area. This is the one that's still surviving..I have my clothesline attached to it.

If you get a wind storm, chances are it will fall. Mine fell in opposite directions and crossed the entire yard. 50' pf tree fell in each direction. I expect this one will go in the next hurricane too.

If you want to try and stabilize that I think a really qualified tree surgeon would be able to do that. Bolts through the tree IMHO, not a good idea.

You should commit to staying around and telling us everything about gardening. And, if you disagree with any of my comments, you can claim seniority .

I am inclined to agree that drilling holes in a damaged trunk may not be a good idea. I am far from being a tree care person and especially not a surgeon. If it wouldn't damage the looks of your garden, I would be very inclined to use a pair of short lengths of an old hose and some good quality wire. Something like what might be used to attach a transplanted tree to 1 or 2 stakes.

The wire could pass through the hose sections several times to provide some strength. Then a piece of pipe could be used to tighten the wire by twisting it. It wouldn't be especially strong and you would have to assess its adequacy for the job but it might take enough stress off the tree.

Now, I'm hoping that others will weigh in on this. There is a longterm investment in trees. It would be a shame to lose one that you especially like.

My sister had a lovely maple tree that did that. They had it bolted. Now, nearly 20 years later, the tree is still thriving. Bolt has nearly been hidden in new growth, too.

I think you need a tree arborist.
