I have never canned before but I started my first garden this year and it's time to start canning. I bought a 23 qt Presto canner and it says it will hold up to 20 pint jars. The only way I can see to put 20 pint jars in there is to stack them on top of each other. I assumed you would do this with some kind of shelves that you could buy, but when I went on line at Presto, they don't sell anything like that? The book that came with the canner doesn't say anything about stacking jars? I asked a buddy who has done a lot of canning and he said he's never heard of stacking jars on top of each other with or without any kind of racks. He said he wouldn't do it? Can anyone advise me on this? I sure could use some help.

I help my hubby can every year (when we have a garden) and we have never stacked our jars!!! I would not recommend doing that. You take a chance on the jars busting in the canner. Then you will have a bigger mess than you going to have when you start canning your veggies. Good luck!

My canner has 'stacking' shelves we use. And yes, we do stack them that way. The shelves slide into the canner (first round of jars on the bottom, put round shelf with holes on top, then next round of jars), mine came with 2. To remove take out top row of jars when done and then hook one of the holes and pull out the silver disk shelf then pull out the bottom jars.

Easy peasy, we use ours all the time. I slam fill my canner since sometime I have to do this 4-5 times! :D

Oops... they're called racks! Here's one on amazon for the presto brand:

haha - struck me as funny "Presto-8 ...nner parts" :)

Sorry Dew, but yes I have stacked jars in the canner. I don't have a stacking rack but I do have a system. Instead of using the bubbler rack on the bottom, I use extra rings. I place a layer of rings in the bottom of the canner, then put in the first layer of jars, then put the bubbler rack on top of them followed by the top layer of jars. My canner will not do 20 pints, only 18, but it's only a 22 quart canner. However, when I double stack pints, I use the timing for quarts instead of pints.

We don't do many pints, so Dew was unaware of this particular technique ;)

Now that you said that I do remember you doing that but since we don't have many pints, it's not very often.... I forgot. :/

Thanks for the advice guy's. It makes sense.
