The other night when I couldn't fall asleep, I caught a old movie on tv Fried Green Tomatoes. Now I have been craving them, even though I never tried them lol. I have never seen them on any menu, I understand they are a southern dish. Can they be made with any unriped green tomatoe? does anyone have a simple way of making them?

I have never had them served to me so I don't know what they're supposed to taste like. When I decided to make them myslef, this is what I came up with.

Green tomatoes - sliced thin
bowl #1 = corn meal + salt, pepper, whatever other spice you think would be good
bolw #2 = same corn meal mix + 1 egg and enough water or milk to make a thin batter
Pan of hot oil

Get a light coating of dry cornmeal mix on both sides of a slice. Then dip in the batter and quickly transfer to the hot oil. Keep dusting, battering, and adding slices till the pan is full but not packed. By that time, it should be time to flip the first slice. Go slow, give them time to brown and get a crisp crust.
OHHHH SOooo Goooood!

dip in buttermilk (seasoned), shake off excess, dip in cornmeal (seasoned), shake off excess. fry in peanut oil - or, skip the buttermilk. it's good that way too

Classic Movie and summer dish.
We always wait until we have had our fill of ripe tomatoes. (Not wanting to sacrifice any future tomatoes. ) LOL
I am not a fancy cook. I just dip slices of green tomatoes into seasoned flour. (salt * pepper) or whatever you like.
Fry until browned in a bit of vegetable oil. ENJOY

For my preference - about 1/4" works well

... is anyone else feeling old because they went to see this 'classic' movie when it first came out?

Nyboy, you absolutely MUST try fried green tomatoes. All the recipes posted are good. I bread all the slices and put them on a plate before I start frying them. I never fry just one tomato!

Go fry some up and come back and tell us how you like them!
