Oh it rained, it rained, it rained!

The Weather Service is a little slow about putting up the numbers for some of their locations but the more distant airport had .39" yesterday. That's okay because it's closer to that serious fire.

The county sheriff says 259 structures burned, primarily homes. The most serious evacuation level has been lifted for most of the area so residents can return. Traffic moved through with i90 open again. The air is much improved with just into Unhealthy on the scale.

I don't think my garden had quite that much rain but I only gave sprinklers 1/2 time, yesterday afternoon.

I know I've been missing for some time, life has been *interesting*. Full time retirement is 7 days away... I'll still be doing 'part time' and some remote while I handle the boss' personal stuff, but not having to drag my behind into the office 5 days a week will be a relief. Meanwhile, DH and I have opened a small produce stand, he calls it our 401k. So, I've been working that on the weekends since July 1, and 5 days a week at this job. I'm not sure retirement is going to be relaxing lol.

Meanwhile, the crusade against the woodchuck is in full gear. He/she/it demolished not only my flower garden out in the yard, but came onto the deck and stripped my coneflowers, parsley, pulled and taste tested a number of plants I've been nursing. I guess it's by good graces that he didn't damage my Prairie Smoke seedling, they are sooo small.

*sips coffee* And there is my story to date. I hope y'all have been healthy and surviing this really odd weather.

Happy Thursday!!! on the verge of the weekend eve!!! On my 2nd cup so Y'all fix a cup and join me on the patio under the table umbrella lights (1st pic attached), it's 63 out there right and feels great. There is also a pitcher of sweet sun tea I made yesterday that I have icing down so it will be cold for any and all who wants a glass. Speaking of glasses they are in the cupboard above the coffee pot. 2nd pic I attached is Savage on top of the dog crates last evening. He thinks he's smarty pants but he does get down on his own now which is a plus.

i still consider it the best thing i ever did when i retired early. i can be busy doing things i mostly enjoy instead of dealing with a boss or projects that someone else can do (who also has a younger body with fewer injuries).

we've had more persistent groundhogs this season including one that tried to dig a den right in the middle of the fenced vegetable gardens. something they've never done before. i hope i've discouraged it enough that it won't do that again but it has been eating a lot of my fresh eating beans and the squash and that's no fun. i'm hoping it won't go after the melons... it did take a bite out of the first melon but not any further damage so we were able to eat that one at the perfect state. now i have the live trap out to see if it will go in there. i'd rather get it before it has children and teaches them that it's ok to go in the fenced gardens. that would be a real pain in the butt... good luck!

Good Morning.

Out turning on the motion detection light collecting some lemon verbena sprigs for the herbal tea. Tragic that I had the bounty of anise hyssop (now all in bloom and delighting the bees ) which I am fairly comfortable in replacing with fennel seed or licorice root. Meanwhile, what I feel is safe to harvest from the 2 LV plants is finished in 3 days ... not the 6 months of Fall and Winter that will soon be required. So, enjoy it while you can!

Stuffed peppers are out of the oven. Easy peasy . The Giant Marconi are so large this year that splitting them and laying horizontal has worked just fine. Usually, I'm chopping the sweet Italian peppers and putting everything in a casserole. That is fine, too.

Caught up on at-home yard and garden work after the days of Unhealthy/Hazardous smoke. I need to mow the backyard twice this week. Yesterday, I decided to set the lawnmower higher to get thru the grass. Lots of Asian greens were pulled and piled that needed to find room to compost in-place in the backyard garden. Walk behind mowing and then weed wacking followed by shovel work -- good to have clean air to breathe!

Dang deer congregate in my front field to have a party at night. This drives the dog’s barking crazy and wakes me up. When I’m good and wide awake, the deer run off and dogs shut up. Was awake 2 hours last night. GRRRRR……

Several people have suggested getting a dog to address the groundhog problem, but it will create the very problem you are suffering... the deer love our space (I wouldn't call it a 'yard', lol) and sometimes sleep a matter of yards away from the deck. It seems I have a choice between having gardens, or sleeping at night lol.

Me too! I often make a pot of Spanish rice with lots of peppers and other good things, but usually am too lazy to use it as stuffing for stuffed peppers.
