A community of seed savers has a recipe to revive rare varieties of collard greens

Collards were once as diverse as the Southern families they fed, but countless varieties have vanished. The race is on to preserve and propagate. That's where the Heirloom Collard Project comes in.

I got inspired to grow collards when Seed Savers Exchange included a packet of Heodrig seed in my new member packet last December.

Wound up ordering two more varieties from them: Miss Annie Pearl Counselman (mentioned in the article) and Ole Timey Blue, which has fabulous reviews! I'm waiting to plant for a fall or overwintered crop though since so much room is currently devoted to beans and peas.

We do love to eat collards but I've never grown them before.
