Moxie, what's up on the ceiling? The busy, low ceiling coupled with the patterned linoleum (?) is making my brain crazy! You're probably stuck with the columns and beam...but i think if i could i'd change the ceiling and floor...

Sometimes I have. More often in rental property than at home.

Red how do YOU want the room to look? If you want a rustic country feel then go with the beams. I would do something with your fireplace from photos firebox looks out of scale. Looks like a tiny firebox with whole wall of brick. I would add a much larger mantle over the firebox.

Adds a bit of rustic, but interesting different idea for that big brick wall ...

What I think happened is someone took out a load bearing wall and put the columns and beam to hold up the ceiling. They may have lowered the ceiling as well since the doors look to be 6'8" with very little space above them. If you were up to a challenge. . . on the other hand, since Dh and I would be doing the changes ourselves it would be a lot cheaper that having it hired out.

Moxies any idea whats behind the ceiling ? Durning the 70s when everyone was worried about energy, people put in false ceilings to save heat. You might have a foot or 2 under the ceiling.

@Lavender2, I have always thought that the ceiling lights gave the room a rustic look as if the wall of brick wasn't enough. Of course, the carpeting rather spoils the rustic theme, I suppose.

The fireplace has never been used. DH decided he didn't want all the mess of toting wood through the room. Ya'll are great! I've never quite liked the mantels and would be up for new ideas there. We left wooden blocks in the brick for screwing the mantels in. Some other options might look a lot better. Help?

Red its ok the put a area rug down over carpet. My livingroom had wall to wall, I put a large area rug down under sofa and 2 chairs to tie seating togather. Many people think area rugs can only be used with hardwood or title floors.
