Today I decided to deflask one of the phalaenopsis seedlings to see if they are ready to live outside of the flasks. The seedling was planted in sphagnum moss moistened with a dilute nutrient solution; it will be initially grown in a domed container then gradually be acclimated to life outside the dome.

I had planned to do this years ago. I got lots of seeds and then decided to learn more. Way too much equipment for me to proceed.I am living vicariously through you. Thanks for the update.
Cat, You can use a microwave, a clear plastic tote and a few baby food jars, the media can be found in Ebay for six dollars. I am sure you could handle it and add a whole new dimension to your growing business.

But how long will it take to get a blooming plant? It would only be for the thrill of success, not the business. That is secondary to me.

The parent plant was pollinated a little over a year ago and now I have a seedling. I would estimate that the plant will be mature in about a year, so figure two years from pollination to new plant flowering. You probably have had a lot of plants for two years. Patience is a virtue so go for it, it was a fun project.

My Amaryillis took about 8 years to bloom. And I still have seedlings than have never bloomed. But they are finally pretty big!
