Early Garden Starts

Wow, that's a lot of babies
dick-dickiebird-Rich! Do you heat your greenhouse?
No I don't, so it will be awhile before they go out there.
The room they're in is 24' X 24' with lots of table space so they stay inside until temps are good in greenhouse.
Some times they get a little leggy so by the time they leave the house they are in quart styro cup with stem buried deep, and often spiraled in the cups.

This evening was my first transplant or up/plant.
This was a small group of six Hillbilly tomatos, a 4 cell container which only had 6 germinate

I gently worked the seedlings loose from the container with the 6" scale, here they are in a pan with the scale for a size comparison.

I chose a bit larger container, showen with the plants in my dirt pan.

I then replanted them in new potting soilI next moistened them and placed them back under the lights.

The styro cups will be their next homes, first the 8oz and if they develope as I hope, they'll go into the 32oz. By then they should be in the greenhouse!!!

Fresh starts, Careful hands, Rich.

I have a mantra:

"Many roots, Some leaves, One stem . . ."

I like to hold them by the seed leaves or, a tomato seedling will often hold my finger by itself - better yet!

As many roots as I can. Focus. I may need to brush soil out of the rootball a little, but gentle strokes.

The stem is nearly sacred. If I damage it, the seedling may die. We are in this together and that is why I like them to hold my finger. I am trying to get them to a better place for growing.

See, that makes me feel late... I haven't even ordered my seeds! lol

I went to the feed store yesterday for a 50# bag of BOSS on sale, pushed my cart over to the aisle they were in, stopping first at the seed rack and impulsively tossing a packet of parsnips, Waltham butternut squash, and Mezza Lunga carrots in, only to find they were out of Boss, retracing my footsteps back to the checkout to pay for my big purchase in the cart.
Does that count as an early start?

I'm pretty good at run-on sentences!
