Boy, there are a LOT of mean chickens out there!! The only roosters that I want are EE or an Orpington. Had my FILL of mean roosters, but Eva would kill one for me in the future if I accidentally raise one and it attacks me.
@ninnymary, in the future I would go over to BackYardChickens and look for a breeder there to sell you what you want. People there sell/ship birds to each other all of the time. I would also use the Internet like a phone book and find a local-ish breeder. They are out there. I have transported chickens in dog crates, cat crates, big, cardboard boxes and also rabbit cages. I use those lightweight, cheapo exercise mats, the ones that hook together like a jigsaw puzzle, to line the crates for birds so that they don't slip. The lady that bought my 6 hens from in December, 2017 also sells ducks, pigs, goats and sheep. I can buy a "lamb", which is a sheep under 1 yo, for $500.00 I send her a check late summer/Fall, she transports the lamb to the local locker, I tell the locker what cuts I want, then I pick them up when ready. Many livestock owners will sell you from their supply.
You need to prepare ahead of time at home.
You should ALWAYS isolate your new livestock in case they harbor a disease. I Thought my new hens had lice, but they didn't. I had 6 of one flocks and 6 of another, so I mixed them up for a one week, then put them all into the same enclosure with the big coop.
You need to understand your livestock. For instance, it takes months to work a new horse into an established herd, some dogs will NOT EVER take to a new one, true of some cats as well, and, if you introduce one new hen into an established flock they will, most probably, kill her by tomorrow.
