My lovely friends gave me some apples the other night. They were drops from a local apple orchard. Hardly bruised at all. They were $0.15 per pound. Such a bargain! So last night I made some applesauce. Some for lunch and some for the freezer. Then I did the first part of the process to get apple juice so that tonight I can make jelly! And then, my hopes are to use the leftover pulp to make apple butter. I hope my plan works out. The scraps went to the chickens this morning. Isn't it great when you can use practically every little last bit of something? Ending up with apple sauce, apple jelly, apple butter and chicken food from apples that would have just gone to waste. Love it!

Sounds great stubbornhillfarm!

I think with all those apples I would want to make pies, apple strudel, tarts and other baked goods :drool . I like baking especially in the fall with all those fruits. But any way you can use up those apples would be very nice. And to think all those nice apples would have gone to waste.
I can't stand to see nice fruits, vegetables or any kind of food just go to no use. Theirs always different ways to use them up.

Good for you for making real good use of all those apples, I'm sure you'll enjoy it!! ;)

:thumbsup

Yum! Sounds great. I often think about what a great system it is to have chickens. They really take care of any "waste" cooking projects make! Since mine will not eat green peppers- I think I need a piglet!!! Just think- nothing would be wasted and it would be turned into bacon!! Just a warning, if I give my chickens a lot of fruit, they usually slow down laying for a few days. I always figure it is worth it, either way...Enjoy your autumn goodies!

Don't forget you can make apple cider vinegar with the apple peels too!
That could be done? When I make some apple pies and use lots of apple maybe I'll try making cider vinegar or just cider.

Thanks thistlebloom! I just didn't think it would be possible to do at home. I've always wondered what hard cider tastes like, must try some, I bet it tastes even better than apple cider.

That would have been the better thing to do with the peels and a money saver! It never would have occured to me. Thanks for the suggestion!

lesa, funny you say about the green peppers. Mine don't really like them either. And I agree about the fruit peels messing with egg production. I have actually almost stopped giving my girls treats, because due to molting, loss of light, and I think daily treats...egg production had stopped. I feel bad not giving them a little something every day, but I also feel bad buying laying pellets and not getting any eggs!

Greenthumb, as we were making the jelly last night, my husband said, "boy I think we should go to the orchard and see if they have any left. We could make all kinds of pies, etc and freeze them too!" Perhaps he would rather see a pie than a jar of jelly. ;)

We ended up with 12 jars of various sizes (getting low on jars). It looks pretty, and the pan residue tasted good. Another successful canning project I think. :D

Stubborn...why don't you make canned apple pie filling? That's what I did.

Mary
I certainly may. I have to get some more jars today for the apple butter that I have the pulp for already. 2nd half of the project. But definatley, if the orchard has some of these apples left, we will get some more and there will be some apple pie and filling in the future!
