I started my squash indoors under flourscent lights. I didn't pre soak the seeds, I just planted them. I kept them watered, but not constantly soggy. I hope this helps.
Don't soak the soil too much or the seeds will rot. Wet it enough to almost produce a drip when you squeeze a handful. If you want them to sprout a little faster, use a fingernail file and gently file away the edges of the seed until you see a color change. Be very careful when filing near the tip so you don't damage the embryo inside. Just a little tip from a former competition giant pumpkin grower
My use of the term "fully loaded" has been troubling me.
I should have added that my containers have a chance to drip once they are out of the water basin. I am not trying to trap any more water than the potting soil can hold naturally.
