grinders? what's your choice?

i got wonderful input regarding canners. boy, that price tag is a kicker. if i bought one, i would indeed have to can.
i'm also wondering about being able to grind my own grains. what kind do you have, are you happy with it?

Your going to find just as many opinions and options on this topic as well. Depends on how often you plan to use it I think. Is it going to be an every day thing? Or do you just want one on hand for the occasional grinding in case of say a power outage etc...

There are a few types as well. Electric, hand crank, metal burrs or stones....

I looked for years for a used one. I finally found a Magic Mill on CL. It weighs a ton and is about the size of a small coffee table.

Have you ever been over to the sister site Sufficient Self? I know that in years past many of theses topics have been discussed.

The price of grinders is out of sight too. We'd love to have one but every one I've seen is out of our budget range.

Yes I got lucky. But like I said I looked on CL for 2 years before I found mine. It is so heavy that when I went to pick it up the lady had kinda dropped it. . Lucky for me the cabinet had just separated bit. My hubby fixed it up no problem.

Yea ... I have a very heavy commercial 220 v grinder that will grind everything from meat to dry corn kernals. ( may be available, also a commercail 3 phase meat table saw... in SW Washington)

Well, I can't say enough for my Vitamix. I make raw foods and so I am always grinding nuts, seeds, and grains. It is truly superb, easy to handle and of course the other attachment blender can liquefy seeds in smoothies, make soups, and ice cream. It's spendy, but you will never need another blender/grain mill!

I researched carefully and studied grain mills before I bought one. They are priced all over the place. People complained about some of the cheaper ones being very loud and having a tendency to dust things up a bit, so they milled outside or on the porch. There are some very expensive ones priced to the moon and back. Really? Really? My word, I just want to make flour for goodness sake. Almost made me want to get 2 stones and rub them together. I finally settled on the Family Grain Mill. I bought the motor attachment and the flaker attachment. It comes with a hand crank option. I paid $338.90 for it from

I love my Family Grain mill. I have my wheat stored in buckets. I used my Food Saver to make air tight packets. I am going to plant some corn this year just so I can mill it for cornmeal. I will shell it off the cob and FoodSaver/bucket store it. The Family Grain Mill will mill corn, but it says not to mill popcorn or flint corn as they are too hard and can damage the mill. Dent or flour corn is fine.

I was waiting to see what Bay had to say. That's what I'm gonna check out.

About 2 stones though... Ever seen the Yuki and Early Pomo Matate and Pestle stones? Awesome setups! The late Pomo Mortar and Pestles are great too. If someone could make those tools they'd have a nice little business.
